Volunteers doing it silly “I love that our volunteers are looking to have some fun and it is great to see people connecting with others and enjoying life,” - Phil Lifeline Tasmania’s North West Retail Manager, Phil Mann, says part of their motto for volunteering at Lifeline is ‘we do it silly’. Across the seven Lifeline Shops in North West Tasmania, 162 volunteers donate more than 40,000 hours of their time each year. Phil says Lifeline Tasmania has a real diverse volunteer workforce, with volunteers coming from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, various ages, or people with mental and physically disabilities. “We really value the contribution any individual can make and we do not ask our volunteers to retire based on age. Even individuals in their nineties can make a tremendous contribution to our work here at Lifeline and the lives of their fellow volunteers,” he explained. Lifeline Tasmania’s Shops help fund the work Lifeline delivers in the Tasmanian community, which in turn helps to save lives. Dianne Cutler, 62, has been volunteering at the Devonport Shop for more than three years. “I was volunteering at a local community services organisation and I could see firsthand how much Lifeline really makes a difference to our community. The previous volunteer work did not suit me anymore, so I contacted Lifeline Tasmania and haven’t looked back.'' Dianne donates 15 hours or more every week and says that the work makes her feel good inside. “I love meeting the people that come in and having a talk with them. Some people don’t come in to shop, but for a chat and it’s lovely to be able to chat with them. “Plus, I really enjoy being part of a friendly team and talking with the other volunteers. We come in and have a really good laugh,” Dianne said. Volunteers at Lifeline Tasmania are matched to a program that suits their needs, interests and capabilities and are provided with training and ongoing support. Dianne says she never feels alone and is well supported, “I can see myself volunteering for many years to come, why wouldn’t I?” For more information on volunteering at Lifeline Tasmania email: [email protected] Manage Cookie Preferences
