Telephone Crisis Supporters (Southern Tasmania)

Lifeline Tasmania delivers crisis support and suicide prevention services through Lifeline’s national 13 11 14 crisis line. This service provides confidential 24/7 telephone crisis support to Australians in need.  Currently Lifeline’s national crisis line receives over 3000 calls per day, this means that every 30 seconds someone in Australia is reaching out to us for support.

What is Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT)?

Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT) is a nationally recognised training program that aims to develop the necessary skills to enable students to become a Lifeline Crisis Supporter on the national 13 11 14 crisis line.

Who can become a Crisis Supporter?  We are seeking people who:

  • Have a desire to make a difference to people in crisis
  • Can demonstrate the relevant attributes as outlined in the Crisis Supporter Position Description, including the ability to display empathy and to interact in a non-judgemental manner
  • Have excellent communication and active listening skills
  • Are willing to undertake a nationally recognised training program, Crisis Supporter Workplace Training, with the understanding that this training has a fee
  • Are over 18 years of age
  • Have basic computer literacy
  • Are willing to undertake a Criminal Record Check prior to acceptance into training
  • Are willing to obtain a Working with Vulnerable People check
  • Are an Australian resident
  • Are willing and able to meet all annual accreditation requirements, including regular shifts, logged in hours, professional development and supervision

Do I need specific qualifications?

No, we provide all the training needed.

Units of competency​

​Lifeline Tasmania delivers this training on behalf of Lifeline Australia RTO 88036 and complies with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTO).

Lifeline Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT) offers a nationally recognised qualification CHCSS00113 Crisis Support Skill Set which includes the following three units of competency:

  • CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide
  • CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • CHCCCS028 Provide client-centred support to people in crisis

The stages of Training:

Stage 1- Training Program: Enjoy a mixture of online learning and face-to-face sessions together with some observation shifts

Stage 2 - Placement: To get confident with providing crisis support, you’ll do supported shifts which enable your supervisor to provide you with feedback and guidance.

Stage 3 - Internship: During your internship you’ll continue volunteer shifts and will be provided with additional training, feedback and coaching.  At the end of this Stage you will take part in a final interaction assessment and interview.

Stage 4 - Accredited Crisis Supporter.  As an Accredited Crisis Supporter, you will provide crisis support while receiving feedback, and taking part in professional development activities.

Annual accreditation requirements​

​To maintain your accreditation as a telephone crisis supporter you will endeavour to:

  • Undertake a minimum of 92 logged-in hours providing crisis support on Lifeline’s national 13 11 14 crisis line
  • Participate in a minimum 8 hours professional development
  • Participate in regular supervision and call coaching
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Check every two years
  • Provide us with up-to-date details of your Working with Vulnerable People check
