At Lifeline Tasmania, we provide a range of training options for workplaces in mental health and wellbeing, along with suicide prevention training.  

SALT Suicide Prevention Training

Delivered by the OzHelp Tasmania Program, SALT is a two-hour suicide prevention training designed to increase suicide alertness in the workplace. The training covers the signs a person may experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and how to connect them to support.

The program also acknowledges that while most people at risk of suicide signal their distress and display invitations for help, these may
be overlooked due to a lack of understanding of the signs. Therefore, participants will learn to recognise when a person may have thoughts of suicide and respond in ways that will link the individual to further help.

Target Audience: Individual (all levels of employees)
Workshop Duration: 2 hours
Recommended Group Size: Min. 6 – Max. 12

Primary Objectives:

  • To increase participants’ knowledge of the topic
  • To encourage exploration of participants’ own values, beliefs, expectations and
    attitudes 
  • To increase self-awareness
  • To provide practical tools that would enable participants’ to be alert to risks and
    warning signs, to intervene and connect someone with thoughts of suicide to appropriate
    support.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increased understanding of suicidal ideation
  • Increased ability to recognise invitations for help and understanding of why they might
    be overlooked
  • Increased ability to notice and respond to situations in which thoughts of suicide may be
    present
  • Understanding of how to apply the S.A.L.T. steps (See, Ask, Listen, Tell/Take)
  • Understanding of how to connect a person with thoughts of suicide to appropriate
    support and further community resources.

Workplace Mental Health & Wellbeing

OzHelp offers a suite of training programs designed to upskill workplaces to better manage mental health and wellbeing. Programs are designed for all levels within an organisation from staff members to CEOs and can be tailored to suit organisational requirements.

Workshops are available in a range of topics such as: Stress, Resilience, Mindfulness, Change, Goal Setting & Pathway Planning, Alcohol & Other Drug Awareness.

Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace

Target Audience: Individual (all levels of employees)
Workshop Duration: 90 minutes
Recommended Group Size: Min. 6 – Max. 24

Overview: Workplaces have a vital role to play in providing supportive environments that promote mental health, wellbeing and resilience in its people. This 90 minute introduction to mental health and wellbeing is designed as the first step towards providing an understanding of what mental health is. Through this understanding participants undertake activities to reflect on their own mental health and wellbeing and develop an action plan to support improvements where needed.

Primary Objectives:
• To support the development of a mentally healthy workplace.
• To increase participants’ knowledge of the topic.
• To encourage exploration of participants’ own values, beliefs, expectations and attitudes.
• To increase self-awareness.
• To develop confidence through the provision of practical skills.

Learning Outcomes:
• Increased understanding of mental health and wellbeing.
• Increased understanding of the importance of creating a mentally healthy and
supportive workplace.
• The development of individual mental health and wellbeing action plans.

Supporting Others in the Workplace

Workshop Duration: 90 minutes

Workshop Overview:

Workplaces have a vital role to play in providing supportive environments that promote mental health, wellbeing and resilience in its people. This 90 minute program follows on from the Introduction to Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace program. It promotes individual resilience and provides practical skills to identify and support coworkers who may be struggling with mental health issues or
life challenges; including thoughts of suicide.

Primary objectives:

  • Improve participant knowledge and attitude towards mental health, as well as understanding of
    how the workplace can influence mental health
  • Provide the skills required to identify and support others who may be struggling with mental health
    issues or life challenges; including thoughts of suicide.

Learning outcome: Improve participant mental health and wellbeing knowledge so that they can look after
themselves and support others.

Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace

Target Audience: Managers, Supervisors, HR
Workshop Duration: 3.5 hours (Includes Introduction Program)
Recommended Group Size: Min. 6 – Max. 20

Workshop Overview

Workplaces have a vital role to play in providing supportive environments that promote mental health, wellbeing and resilience in its people. This three and a half hour program includes the Introduction to Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace program. It is specifically designed to empower managers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage workers presenting with issues pertaining to mental health and/or mental illness.

Primary Objectives

  • To support the development of mentally healthy and supportive workplaces
  • To delineate the difference between mental health issues and mental illness
  • To provide activities that enhance active listening, rapport building and identification of issues with
    staff
  • To assist managers to work collaboratively with their staff to improve their mental health
  • To provide a framework that enables managers to take appropriate action and identify appropriate
    pathways of referral.

Learning outcomes

  • Ability to identify issues pertaining to mental health in staff
  • Ability to effectively manage a mentally healthy workplace
  • Ability to seek and/or provide support for people with mental health and wellbeing issues.
